Operation Piratenjagd: Schiff unter Beschuss! | Focus TV Reportage

For months in 2008, the frigate "Emden" controlled the sea routes around the Horn of Africa to combat terrorist-related arms and drug smuggling. But there was also other work to be done: In the early morning of April 21, 2008, the warship received a distress call from the Japanese oil tanker "Takayama." It was under fire. Commander Michael Giss immediately altered his ship's course and dispatched a combat helicopter. Hunting pirates was not part of the "Emden's" mandate – but in cases of so-called "emergency assistance," the Germans were authorized to intervene, even with armed force if necessary. The Focus TV report was there firsthand in 2008 when the frigate became involved in this dangerous combat mission and also when it returned to its home port of Wilhelmshaven after six months on a dangerous mission. There were cheers, tears of joy – and a marriage proposal... Nothing is more exciting than reality – reports on topics that affect Germany.
