Open Space: Warhol.ss | Mass Appeal
Warhol.ss has that rare opportunity to be from two cities that both have lit rap scenes. While he's a Chicago-native, he went to high school in Atlanta, where he dropped his first tape the day he graduated. But it was Brooklyn that inspired him to go for it. "I started rapping at 17 but was watching Pro Era a year beforehand," he tells MASS APPEAL for "Open Space." "I told myself, ain't nothing stopping me from doing what they did." Atlanta obviously had its impact too. "It's one of the main city's in the U.S., but it's still the country. You still get that country feel, like if you was in deep Texas or something," he says of his experience there. "You know how in New York or Chicago, we got a certain swag about us. But Atlanta got the best of both worlds because it's so many people who come from other places and add to the Atlanta swag." He took that back with him to Chicago, where he allowed himself to be himself. "Me and Dex bringing new light to Chicago," he says of Famous Dex, a close friend. "We don't give off that same violent persona. We just be ourselves. It's no reason to be flashing guns and doing this." But that doesn't mean the violence is something he shies away from, and he looks up to artists like Keef for addressing it in their music: "Anybody from Chicago who say they wasn't a Chief Keef fan is lying, period. Or they old. 'We don't like all that violence, blah blah blah.' But that was the only mother fucker that was really telling the story about what the fuck was really going on."
