Rock of the week - chlorite phyllite and the Caledonian orogeny

ROCK OF THE WEEK: Chlorite Phyllite 💚 This one might not look flashy… but it’s got a story 🔥 Chlorite phyllite sits right in the middle of metamorphism—where mudstone starts getting cooked and squeezed deep in the Earth’s crust, but hasn’t quite made it to schist yet. Think of it as the awkward teenage phase of rocks 😅 That green shimmer? That’s chlorite, formed under low to medium temperatures and pressures—giving this rock its silky sheen and wavy, crinkled texture (called phyllitic foliation 👀) You’ll find rocks like this all over Scotland, especially in the Highlands, where ancient mountain-building events have completely transformed the crust beneath your feet. So next time you see a slightly shiny, green-grey rock splitting into thin sheets… you might just be holding a piece of Scotland’s tectonic past 🤯 👉 Follow for more #RockOfTheWeek 👉 Want to see rocks like this in real life?
