Shelby American Evolution - (1962 - 2025) Shelby American, founded in 1962 by legendary racer and automotive designer Carroll Shelby, is one of the most iconic American performance car manufacturers. The company is best known for producing high-performance versions of Ford vehicles, particularly the Shelby Cobra and the Shelby Mustang. Carroll Shelby, a former race car driver who won the 1959 24 Hours of Le Mans, sought to create a powerful American sports car. He partnered with British automaker AC Cars, modifying their AC Ace with a Ford V8 engine. The result was the Shelby Cobra, a lightweight, high-horsepower roadster that became a dominant force in racing. Shelby Cobras, especially the 427 Cobra, were incredibly fast and are now among the most valuable classic cars. In the mid-1960s, Shelby American also worked with Ford to develop high-performance Mustang variants. Shelby’s partnership with Ford led to the creation of the Shelby GT350 and the more powerful GT500 Mustangs. These cars featured modified engines, better handling, and aggressive styling. By 1970, Shelby stopped producing Mustangs under his brand, and Ford took over performance modifications. Carroll Shelby revived Shelby American in the 1980s, working on performance upgrades for Chrysler, including the Dodge Shelby Charger and Viper. In the 2000s, Ford and Shelby rekindled their partnership, leading to modern high-performance Mustangs like the Shelby GT500, GT350, and Super Snake. Today, Shelby American continues to produce high-performance vehicles, tuning Mustangs, F-150s, and even electric cars.
