6th Int. E-Seminar on MIL: AI for the Public Good: A Media & Information Literacy Imperative

The 6th International E-Seminar on Contemporary Issues in Media and Information Literacy, under the theme "Artificial Intelligence for the Public Good: A Media and Information Literacy Imperative" was co-organized by Moulay Ismail University of Meknes, Morocco, and UNESCO, with the partnership of MEDEA, Mediterranean Europe and Africa on November 13, 2023 in Celebration of Global MIL Week 2023 #GlobalMILWeek. I had the honour to moderate this panel of experts, composed of the following Eminent Speakers: Dr. Ming-Kuok LIM, Advisor for Communication & Information Sector, UNESCO Office for the Maghreb, Rabat, Morocco, presented the new UNESCO Guidebook on Reporting on Artificial Intelligence, UNESCO’s ongoing work on AI Ethics and other important UNESCO resources. The Video Recording includes a list of open-access UNESCO resources which he addressed in his intervention. Ms. Rachel Fischer, Parliamentary Engagement & Research Manager at the Organisation Undoing Tax Abuse (OUTA), South Africa, tackled the necessity of “Equipping Citizens for the AI Era: The Crucial Role of Policies, Media and Information Literacy, Universities and Information Ethics.” Prof. Joan Barata, Senior Legal Fellow, Future of Free Speech Project at Justitia, USA, raised the important dimension of "Freedom of Expression and AI: Risks and Opportunities." Ms. Sherri Hope Culver, Director, Center for Media and Information Literacy (CMIL), Temple University, USA, expert in children’s media placed "Children + AI + the Public Good" at the centre of the discussion. Dr. Sebastian Novomisky, Chief of Training and Promotion at the Public Defender's Office, Argentina, explained in practical terms the new maxims to take into consideration in the era of AI: "Artificial Intelligence: The Great Challenge for Media Literacy." Mr. Manuel-Antonio Monteagudo, Filmmaker & Media Literacy Educator, Peru, shared with us a hands-on experience on MIL in the AI landscape: “Mastering the Tool before the Tool Masters us.” Dr. Drissia Chouit, Program Director & Moderator, Professor at Moulay Ismail University of Meknes, Morocco, & Co-Chair of UNESCO MIL Alliance [email protected]
