Puun matka metsästä hirreksi - Hirsipuiden hankinta

The construction of a handcrafted log house begins with careful wood procurement. Join us in the forest to see how Hirsityö Heikkilä selects the finest building logs directly from forest. In this video, we go through the critical factors that determine the quality of a log even before the very first axe strike. 0:00 Beginning 1:51 An unsuitable tree for log construction 2:18 Quality criteria for a good log tree 3:05 Making the felling notch 4:33 Assessing the felled tree 4:58 Using a mechanical felling wedge 6:56 Introduction to the Stihl 500i 7:16 Assessing the tree’s felling direction ❄️ Why Is the Right Season of Tree Felling Important? The best time to fell construction timber is in winter (February–March). During this period, the tree is dormant and its moisture content is at its lowest. Winter felling ensures: • Less cracking and warping • Cleaner trunks during transport • Better durability for decades to come 🌲 How Are High-Quality Building Logs Sourced? We search the forest for only the very best raw material. Our main criteria are: • Straightness and slow growth: A dense grain structure makes the log durable. • Large diameter and thickness: We select trunks that are sufficiently thick even at the top, ensuring they can be sawn into high-quality flat logs. • Few knots: Reduces the amount of processing required and improves overall quality. • The mark of craftsmanship: We handle the wood procurement ourselves. This allows us to avoid surface damage caused by forestry machinery tracks and ensures that the trunks are cut to lengths suitable for construction. For us, quality means controlling the entire process from the forest to the finished building. This is how we ensure the highest possible quality in the final result.
