Thank you for watching. Below is a video introduction from Mr. B, the filmer. This footage was taken on May 5, 1985, of the Yamanote Freight Line and Tokyu Toyoko Line. The footage was taken between Shibuya and Ebisu, but the line crossed over the Tokyu Toyoko Line, which has now been moved underground and is no longer visible. The Yamanote Line had just been replaced by the 205 series, replacing the long-running 103 series. 01:11 shows a freight train running on the freight line. This appears to be the Kumoyu 141-Kumoyuni 143-Kumoyuni 143-Kumoyu 143 formation. Kumoyuni 143 was originally introduced for the Minobu Line, but was transferred to Nagaoka when freight service on that line was discontinued. Kumoyu 143 was introduced in 1982 and only served for three and a half years, but I was lucky enough to capture it here. At 02:14, we see the "Salon Express Tokyo" pulled by an EF65, at 06:32 we see the tatami-style passenger car "Kutsurogi" (old livery), and at 08:41 we see the "Shirakaba." At 12:36, we see a freight train pulled by an EF64 1000 series, replacing the EF58, but the train itself was discontinued the following year. The 15:29 train is the Salon Express Tokyo again, but perhaps it picked up passengers around Shinjuku and returned home? The Yamanote Freight Line is now home to the Shonan-Shinjuku Line and the Saikyo Line, but back then, in addition to freight and baggage trains, special and group trains were also common.
