But this product is not without its dangers: in the last decade, regulatory authorities have added a host of new warnings regarding the risk of sexual dysfunction or depression, rare side effects that can persist for years after stopping treatment. At the heart of the controversy are allegations that Merck, the molecule's inventor, was aware of these risks but chose to downplay them in order to maximize profits.
