It is called Ittawa in Sinhala and Mullam Pandi in Tamil. They are nocturnal and an agricultural pest. The porcupine, as popularly believed, does not shoot out its quills, which are hollow. When excited or in defense the quills are erected. This makes the porcupine look bigger than it actually is and also prevents any predator from attacking it due to the sharp quills all round the body, pointing outwards.
