Choreographer Maurice Béjart created the ballet "The Kabuki" for the Tokyo Ballet in 1986, based on the kabuki play "Kanadehon Chushingura." This ballet will be performed for the first time in six years as part of the company's 60th anniversary series. This video captures a rehearsal held at the Tokyo Ballet's studio in early October, just before the opening. For this performance, special instruction was provided by Mizoshita Shiro, who served as artistic director at the premiere of "The Kabuki" and danced the role of Bannai himself. "It's been 19 years since I last set foot in a Tokyo Ballet rehearsal studio," says Mizoshita. We spoke to him about what Béjart taught him and what is important when dancing a Béjart work. Also included are comments from Miyagawa Arata, who will be making his debut as Yuranosuke, Kaneko Hitomi, who plays Kaoyo Gozen, and Ifuku Shuntaro, who will dance the second variation in the raid in Act 2.
