Applications of Relativistic Doppler Effect | in Astronomy | in Radar | in Laser Cooling
This video discusses the various of applications of Relativistic Doppler effect, i.e, Doppler effect in light or other electromagnetic radiation. This video forms a part of the series of videos on this channel on the subject of Albert Einstein's theory of Special Relativity. In earlier posts, I had covered Doppler effect as two parts and I had also posted a video on Doppler effect in Binary stars. In this video, I discuss various applications of relativistic Doppler effect in astronomy, in radar systems and in laser cooling. I start by introducing Doppler effect and then I list out the three categories of applications before going into details of each of these categories. The astronomy applications include velocity measurements of stars and galaxies, detection of exoplanets, speed and sense of rotation of venus and detection of binary star systems. Radar applications include detection of overspeeding using a radar gun, applications in meteorology for weather forecasting, applications in metrology for measurements of motion, vibration and flows. Finally, I discuss applications in laser cooling specifically the Doppler cooling technique which is useful in atomic clocks and Bose-Einstein condensates.
