Carl Menger is the founder of the Austrian School of Economics. His first book, Principles of Political Economy, despite being a rather short text, opened new and important frontiers in economic thought and established a new way of viewing economic activity. The book, however, presents an interesting paradox, since Menger intended to demonstrate the existence of laws in economic science, but modern Austrian economics focuses on the role of entrepreneurial innovation and rule-breaking, as Professor Huerta de Soto's work shows. Throughout this session with András Toth, we will analyze this apparent paradox, as well as the implications of Menger's ideas for our sociological understanding of society and politics. András Tóth is the director of the Carl Menger Institute in Budapest, Hungary. He holds a PhD in Sociology and a degree in Public Administration. He regularly publishes in outlets such as Mises Wire, the Juan de Mariana Institute, and the Carl Menger Institute blog. His main research focus is the work of Carl Menger and the Austrian School.
