NYCT Bx5 SBS Schemed Bus Ride: 2017 Nova Bus LFSA 5473 from Longwood to Bay Plaza

Taken on 7/8/23. Footage of SBS schemed 2017 Nova Bus LFSA 5473 operating on the Bx5 between Southern Boulevard & Westchester Avenue in the Longwood/Foxhurst neighborhood, and Bay Plaza. This is the full route of the Bx5, which is served only on weekends. Weekday service terminates at Pelham Bay Park, and does not continue north to Co-Op City. SBS schemed buses are more common on the Bx5 during the summer months due to the necessity of buses. Gun Hill Depot, which the Bx5 is based out of, also covers the Bx12 route. During the summer, Bx12 local service is expanded significantly. Daytime service extended in both directions to Orchard Beach and Inwood and more frequent service overall. This requires more resources than normal, and could potentially chip in to spares of different types of buses at any given moment. While currently SBS buses along the Bx5 route are more sporadic, it will eventually be a common site on its western half. As part of the Bronx bus redesign, the Bx6 SBS is slated to be rerouted/extended to Soundview via Story Avenue. However this service change will not be implemented until full OMNY rollout on NYC Transit arrives, since the MTA does not want to spend money installing/maintaining the SBS machines. However, the OMNY rollout has been delayed. Initially anticipated by the end of 2023, the full rollout for NYC Transit is now in late 2024. Given that, it does not appear that the Bx6 will be running to/from Soundview until around 2025.
