"I have a question about pencil drawing. At my art school, we often get still-life assignments that combine industrial products and natural objects. I'm fairly good at drawing industrial products, but I struggle with natural objects. I'm also not good at capturing shapes, but the thing I struggle with the most is expressing texture. In my case, if I spend time, I can achieve precision in shape, three-dimensionality, and tonal balance between motifs to a certain extent (although tonal balance is difficult to notice as grays until some time has passed), but texture remains flat no matter how much time I spend. Natural objects are the worst. (I'm particularly bad at the texture and undulations of fruits, vegetables, and fabrics.) Even when I try to bring out texture, the grain of the paper is either crushed or inconspicuous after applying the tones, and it's a disaster. My teacher said it's due to my habit, lack of observation, and stiff drawing style, but honestly, I don't think I can fix it.
