That was our challenge in this episode. We set out at 3 a.m. through the Sergipe river bar, in calm seas but total darkness, relying on GPS, sonar, and instinct. Throughout the day, we faced opposing currents, unstable winds, rain, and the tight timing of the high tide to safely enter the São Francisco. On arrival, with the help of Chumbinho as pilot and Mário Jorge, we crossed a bar where the depth dangerously fluctuated between 3 and 6 meters — with a boat drawing 2 meters. It was one of the tensest moments of the trip. This is also a place marked by history: the old Cabeço settlement was swallowed by the sea in 1999, after dams along the river reduced the sediment flow. The lighthouse that guided vessels for over 120 years still stands, protected, in the middle of the sea.
