An Introduction to French Wine (for Spirits Nerds &c.) in One Mixed Case
I've finally accepted that, despite repeated promises, I'm just never going to do that series on different Mai Tais. So in lieu of that, let's do another educational case of wine. Last year I put together a case of wine as an attempt to, as comprehensively as possible, introduce wine to spirits nerds (or whoever's interested) in twelve bottles that I bought from my local Binny's ( • Another Introduction to Wine (for Spirits ... ). And then I repeated the same idea again, except Italy ( • An Introduction to Italian Wine (for Spiri... ). I didn't necessarily expect everyone to find exactly those bottles, but the idea was that I would hopefully explain the bottle types and my reasoning for picking them well enough that folks could find something similar. And then the Patrons got tasting notes afterwards. This time we're doing the same thing again, except it's France. And I've had this ambition for awhile, but France did seem more daunting - how could I possibly do it justice, and how could I keep the price not far over the $200 mark? And then when I actually started spitballing and making notes to myself, it actually came together way quicker than Italy did. No Champagne because it couldn't make the price point (but no I didn't do a Cremant because that felt like cheating) and no Loire Cabernet Franc because I bring it up anytime I talk about wine, but just about everything else with any heft on the international market is represented. So here's the list: - Chateau Rieussec 2018 (Sauternes) Chateau Bourbon La Chapelle Medoc 2020 (Bordeaux Rouge) Chateau Nicot Entre Deux Mers Blanc 2025 (Bordeaux Blanc) Chateau Moncontour Vouvray Demi Sec 2024 Domaine de Rochebin Bourgogne Blanc 2023 Louis Jadot Pinot Noir Bourgogne Rouge 2023 Laurent Perrachon Beaujolais Villages 2024 Hugel Gentil 2023 (Alsace Blend) Maison les Alexandrins Crozes Hermitage 2022 (Northern Rhone) Domaine Le Couroulu Vacqueyras 2020 (Southern Rhone) Gassier Cotes de Provence Rosé 2025 Chateau Armandiere Cahors 2019 Again, I'm not expecting that you can find these exact bottles, but this should give you a template. Hopefully those of you interested in exploring wine will find this helpful! And notes for the Patrons soon!
