A clean water tanker driver was shot by an unknown assailant on the Dekai-Lopon route, Thursday afternoon (February 12, 2026). The incident occurred while the victim was driving a tanker truck carrying clean water supplies to residents in the Lopon area. En route, the victim was shot from the side of the road and suffered a gunshot wound to the left side of his back. Despite his injuries, the victim and a porter accompanying him continued their journey until they reached Lopon to escape. Authorities immediately received a report of the incident, and the Carstensz 2026 Peace Operation Task Force, along with the Yahukimo Police, quickly responded to the scene. The victim was then evacuated to Dekai Regional Hospital for intensive medical attention. According to the latest information, the victim was in critical condition and underwent initial medical treatment before being referred to the Bhayangkara Hospital of the Papua Regional Police in Jayapura for more comprehensive follow-up care. The Head of Operation Peace Cartenz 2026, Brigadier General Dr. Faizal Ramadhani, S.Sos., S.I.K., M.H., emphasized that the authorities will not tolerate acts of violence against civilians, especially those engaged in basic services. "The victim was a member of the public working to transport basic necessities, such as clean water. This is an intolerable act. We moved quickly to evacuate the victim and secure the situation. Law enforcement will be carried out firmly against the perpetrator," stated Brigadier General Faizal Ramadhani. He added that public safety is the top priority in every step of Operation Peace Cartenz. "Our presence here is to ensure that the community can carry out its activities safely. There must be no fear when residents earn a living or carry out their daily work," he said. Meanwhile, the Head of the Public Relations Task Force for the Cartenz 2026 Peaceful Operation, Senior Commissioner of Police Yusuf Sutejo, S.I.K., M.T., confirmed the incident and explained the chronology and the swift steps taken by the authorities. "Yes, a shooting occurred against a clean water tanker driver on the Dekai-Lopon route. The victim suffered a gunshot wound to the left side of his back and continued his journey to escape. After receiving the report, our personnel immediately went to the location, conducted an examination, and evacuated the victim for medical treatment, ultimately leading to his transfer to the Bhayangkara Hospital of the Papua Regional Police in Jayapura," he explained. He added that after the evacuation process, authorities conducted a tactical response around the scene. Officers encountered three to four suspicious individuals who then fled by crossing the Blue River and entering a forest area. The search and pursuit are still ongoing, taking into account the geographical conditions of the area. Based on the preliminary investigation, suspicions point to an armed criminal group (KKB) originating from the Yahukimo area. Authorities are still investigating the identity and connections of the group to ensure the legal process runs optimally. As a precautionary measure, security along logistics distribution routes and at several vital facilities in Yahukimo Regency has been increased. Coordination with the local government is also being carried out to ensure the distribution of community necessities continues with adequate security.
