A microphone, colloquially nicknamed mic or mike is a transducer that converts sound into an electrical signal. Here is a quick little video on two of the main microphones types (Dynamic and Condenser) There's a lot of different kinds of microphones out there, but since you will most likely only encounter the condenser and the dynamic microphone in your life, I didn't talk about them.
