Bea Arthur with Jerry Herman at the piano performs "If He Walked INto My Life"
In this clip, Bea Arthur with Jerry Herman at the piano performs "If He Walked Into My Life" from Mame at Jerome Lawrence's Memorial service that I produced at the Mark Taper Forum in May 2004. This performance in front of only 300 people is an expression of love from two friends to their friend who has passed on. This is a performance that almost didn't happen. When I first asked Bea to participate in the memorial she said, "No, Will darling. I don't think I can do it. I loved him so much and I don't want fall apart on stage." I asked her to think about it. Then I called Jerry Herman and he said, "She'll do it." He came up with the idea of Bea sitting next to him at the piano and altered the lyric of the song slightly to fit a memorial service. Bea is 81 in this clip and just heartbreakingly beautiful. It's a clip about love and lasting friendship which is my Valentine's wish for everyone.
