There is Mrs. Chunja, the village chief's wife and the village's problem solver; Grandma Kim Jeong-nam, a master of Minhwatu-gye; and Grandma Choi Young-sook, known for having the best cooking skills in Naedusan. Even in winter, they remain incredibly busy. Whenever they have a spare moment, they gather to share traditional foods such as potato rice, handmade tofu, and starch noodles. Whenever a patient falls ill in the village, Mrs. Chunja treats them with her skillful hands. On the eve of the Lunar New Year, when they perform the ancestral rites, the story of Grandma Choi Young-sook—who became a widow 30 years ago and whose four children have all left for Korea and the big city—is heartbreaking. ■ The Exciting Spring Shakes Naedusan The long, long winter of Mt. Baekdu has passed, and spring has arrived. However, in May, Cheonji Lake remains in the depths of winter; snow is piled high, and the water is frozen solid. Yet, in Naedusan Village at its foot, swallows have returned, and spring flowers are blooming profusely. The residents tend to the village flower paths to celebrate the arrival of spring and plant potatoes, a local specialty of Naedusan Village. These people still uphold the tradition of mutual aid; although the labor is arduous now that the younger generation has left, they can endure it thanks to their neighbors. ■ The Spring Breeze and Dance Breeze of Naedusan Village On the day a group of tourists from as far away as Guangdong Province visited the village, Ms. Chunja, the owner of the only shop, lets out a joyful scream as she experiences a boom for the first time in a long while... The grandmothers, who were holding a birthday party for a villager, make a collective appearance. The place they arrive at is a large restaurant and performance hall in the village. When the tourists request it, the grandmothers change into beautiful Hanbok and perform traditional Korean dances in front of them. Tourists cheer at the unfamiliar Korean-Chinese culture, such as the Tungso dance and Jige dance; for each performance, they earn 20 yuan (3,800 won). It is a substantial side income. ■ Naedusan Village, a Hometown They Want to Protect Forever After their children's health and success, there is a wish the grandmothers hold: that Naedusan Village endure forever. Naedusan Village is their hometown, a place filled with the scent of their parents, memories of raising their children, and longing for their late husbands. To protect this village, they dance even more diligently and prepare new choreography. With the grandmothers earnestly asking us to visit again in the autumn when the potatoes and corn ripen, Naedusan Village, the first village of Mt.
