Then a seventeen-year-old human girl named Wren Ibarra sat down in the chair, and the machine chimed after ninety seconds, and said the sample was contaminated. Then it said it again. Then it said something no one at the Academy of Comparative Life had ever read in four hundred thousand years of reading: ADDITIONAL ANOMALIES DETECTED. ESTIMATED DURATION: NINE DAYS. What the Ledger found in nine days emptied every lecture hall on Alenth Rise and filled the oldest room in the Academy with four hundred people who could not sit down. It found a headcount of the dead. It found thirty-one times a species came down to a number you could fit in one room.
