Live Irish Myths episode #145: Giraldus Cambrensis
Today's episode of Live Irish Myths will look at the Norman 'historian' Gerald of Wales (Giraldus Cambrensis) whose History and Topography of Ireland is an oft-cited if somewhat controversial piece of medieval propaganda. Gerald was a member of one of the leading Norman families involved in the invasion of Ireland and first visited here in 1183. His account of his travels provides a valuable insight to medieval life in Ireland, although he was something of a rapscallion whose views about Ireland and its people were hardly full of reverence or admiration.
