Alexandria to Fairfax, Virginia via Duke Street & Little River Turnpike | Mobile Observations

This Mobile Observation documents a westbound journey along Duke Street and Little River Turnpike (Virginia Route 236), beginning in Old Town Alexandria and concluding in the City of Fairfax, Virginia. Recorded on June 29, 2026 at approximately 2:11 PM, this observation begins near South Pitt Street in historic Alexandria before following Duke Street westward through the city's West End and into Fairfax County. The route continues through Lincolnia and Annandale, crosses the Interstate 495 Capital Beltway, and ultimately enters the City of Fairfax, ending near the intersection of Little River Turnpike (Route 236), Fairfax Boulevard (Route 50), and Lee Highway (Route 29). Along the way, viewers will observe a diverse cross-section of Northern Virginia, including historic neighborhoods, commercial corridors, transportation infrastructure, residential communities, and areas undergoing significant redevelopment. A notable feature of this observation is the former Landmark Mall site, where the massive WestEnd Alexandria redevelopment project is transforming more than fifty acres into a mixed-use community anchored by the future Inova Alexandria Hospital campus, new residential neighborhoods, retail districts, public parks, and expanded transit infrastructure. The route also passes through Annandale, one of Fairfax County's most diverse commercial centers, before continuing toward downtown Fairfax, where additional redevelopment and modernization projects are planned along the Main Street corridor. The purpose of this recording is to preserve a visual record of this important transportation corridor and its surrounding built environment as they appeared during the summer of 2026. Weather conditions during filming were mostly cloudy with temperatures ranging from approximately 84°F to 86°F, high humidity near 87 percent, and light easterly winds around 5 miles per hour. The observation covers approximately 15.6 miles and has a running time of approximately 51 minutes.
