AI as Your Grant Writing Partner: Ethical and Effective Approaches

Jointly hosted by Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies (GPS), Research Development Services Portfolio of the Office of the Vice President (Research), and U of A Library This workshop explores how emerging AI tools are reshaping grant proposal development. Participants will learn how to use AI responsibly and effectively, with an overview of current institutional and federal government guidelines and ethical considerations. The session will introduce a new website designed to support proposal writing from the Research Office, discuss best practices for crafting effective prompts, and showcase practical applications using tools such as Gemini Gems and NotebookLM. By the end of the workshop, researchers will have concrete strategies to ethically and effectively integrate AI into their grant proposal development workflow. Learning Outcomes: Identify key institutional and federal government guidelines and ethical considerations for using AI in grant proposal writing. Apply effective prompt-writing strategies to generate and refine grant proposal content using AI tools. Evaluate the strengths and limitations of AI-generated outputs in the context of research funding applications. Gain familiarity with tools such as Gemini Gems and NotebookLM to support different stages of the grant development process. Integrate AI-supported workflows into the grant proposal writing to improve efficiency and idea development.
