The brace, also known as a strut, is an important part of carpentry structures. This element serves two basic functions. Firstly, it stiffens the structure by resisting forces acting parallel to the brace plane. For example, struts at the corners of beam walls. A purlin truss with a wall and a beam wall. Secondly, it reduces the span between the columns supporting the purlins. This reduces the stresses occurring within the purlin and allows for the use of a smaller cross-section. A moment diagram of a purlin supported by braces and a purlin without braces is provided for comparison. The connection of a brace to a column depends primarily on the width of both elements or their relative position. Three cases can be distinguished: a brace of smaller width and positioned axially relative to the column; a brace of smaller width and positioned flush with the side surfaces of both elements; and a column and brace of the same width. The first type of connection allows the use of a basic carpentry joint, the tenon. This stabilizes the brace's position relative to the column, preventing movement during construction or the wood itself. It is good practice to offset the edge of the tenon from the edge of the brace. This helps conceal any damage that may occur during the formation of the socket in the column. Inserting wooden dowels into the joint prevents the tenon from slipping out of the socket. A slight offset between the holes in the column and brace allows the joined elements to be pulled together. It is important to remember that when using a doweled tenon, it must be of sufficient height to prevent the tenon tip from splitting during assembly or joint operation. It is equally important to leave a gap in the depth of the socket to allow the wood to move freely. Another connection possible in this system is a notch. Due to the different widths of the elements being connected, it should be a covered notch. The advantage of this type of connection is the short construction time. For elements of the same width, the notch will be open. In such a situation, it is advisable to equip this connection with an additional tenon to prevent the brace from shifting relative to the column. The option of additional doweling further stabilizes the connection. This large number of machining operations makes this a very difficult and time-consuming connection. Braces of the same width as the column or flush with one of its sides allow, in addition to the above-mentioned, for the introduction of a capping type connection. At the common plane of the elements, the brace visibly penetrates the column to a specified depth. The thickness of the brace capping should be selected so as not to weaken the column while not excessively reducing the brace cross-section at the connection point. Stabilizing the brace in this case requires the use of additional nails or screws. The capping may also have a cutout. This prevents the brace from moving along its axis and simultaneously adds an attractive appearance to the connection. A much simpler solution is a butt joint. However, this requires the use of additional elements in the form of metal connectors. Their function is to maintain the correct position of the connected elements during assembly. Nails, screws, or tie bolts are used for this purpose. An example of a modern method of joining elements is the use of perforated plates or pressed-in nail plates. However, the latter option requires the use of specialized presses, which means prior prefabrication of the joint in the factory. The advantage of butt joints is their low labor intensity and short construction time.
