The journey begins in the center of Sassari, a university and administrative city, the second largest in Sardinia after Cagliari. Leaving the city center, you join the historic SS 131 Carlo Felice, the main route that crosses the island from north to south, connecting Porto Torres to Cagliari. After the first few kilometers, you reach the junction that allows you to leave the Carlo Felice and take the SS 729. This infrastructure is relatively recent: construction work has been ongoing for several years, with the various sections gradually opening between 2016 and 2024, until the entire route is completed. The route, entirely free-flowing and with highway-like characteristics, replaced the old SS 199, a winding road that required much longer travel times. Today, the journey between Sassari and Olbia takes just under an hour, completely safe and significantly time-saving. The SS 729 winds for approximately 80 kilometers through a central part of northern Sardinia, characterized by hilly and often wild landscapes. After the initial uphill stretches on the Sassari side, the road runs halfway up the hillside through cultivated fields, pastures, and the area's typical granite formations. The main junctions serve towns such as Ardara, a small village known for the Romanesque Basilica of Santa Maria del Regno; Ozieri, a historic town in the Logudoro subregion; and Tula, overlooking the artificial Coghinas Lake. These connections ensure rapid connections between the inland towns and the two key hubs of Sassari and Olbia. Proceeding east, the route approaches the Monte Acuto area, an area characterized by rugged mountains and views that suddenly open onto valleys and plateaus. The highway serves towns such as Berchidda, famous for its international "Time in Jazz" festival, conceived by Paolo Fresu, and Oschiri, renowned for its traditional "panini di Oschiri" (Oschiri sandwiches) and for its archaeological heritage, which testifies to the long history of this part of Sardinia. Each junction has been designed with modern roundabouts and slip roads, promoting accessibility and safety for local traffic as well. The roadway remains wide and smooth, with two lanes in each direction and a central reservation. Numerous viaducts allow for overcoming the rugged terrain, reducing gradients and ensuring a steady flow. Approaching Gallura, the landscape changes again: the hills open up to gentler, brighter landscapes, dominated by wind-sculpted granite and Mediterranean scrub. The Monti, Chirialza, and Loiri junctions now signal the proximity to Olbia. Traffic tends to increase here, especially during the summer months, when the city becomes a popular destination for tourists heading to the Costa Smeralda and the numerous seaside resorts of Gallura. The entrance to Olbia is via a modern bypass that directly connects the SS 729 with the SS 125 Orientale Sarda. Olbia is not only a port and airport serving millions of passengers, but also a vibrant city, with a historic center characterized by pedestrian streets, bars, shops, and archaeological remains dating from the Nuragic to Roman eras.
