Daughters inherited property just like sons, and they took turns performing ancestral rites. Records from 1566 regarding the division of property among Yulgok Yi I's seven children show that inheritance was distributed equally without distinction between sons and daughters. However, why and how was this system completely overturned? We trace the process by which a "primogeniture-centered society" was created through the simultaneous operation of three forces: the Neo-Confucian patriarchal order, the Imjin War and the Manchu Invasion, and changes in the law.
