He then played for the amateur baseball team "Ricker" before joining the Hanshin Tigers as the first draft pick. He made a significant contribution to the Hanshin Tigers' Japan Series championship in 1985, and was even lifted up in celebration. After retiring from professional baseball after 13 years, he returned to the Hanshin Tigers as pitching coach in 2003, where he remained for 12 years until 2015. His nickname is "Kyudo (kun)" after the main character of Shinji Mizushima's manga "Kyudo-kun".
