He was a well-known singer of Hindustani music. He was one of the Navratnas of the court. His guru was Sufi saint Mohammad Gaus. According to old stories, when Tansen used to sing Raga Malhar, it used to rain. In memory of Tansen, Tansen Music Festival is celebrated every year in November and December, in which great singers and musicians of India participate. Tansen's real name was Ram Tanu Pandey. He was a great scholar of Hindustani classical music. Ram Tanu Pandey was born in village Behat, about 50 km from Gwalior. His father's name was Makarand Pandey. In 1486, a son was born to Makarand Pandey. The family named him Ram Tanu, who later became famous as Tansen. Raja Mansingh Tomar encouraged Tansen's art. After the death of Raja Mansingh Tomar, Tansen went to Vrindavan and there he received higher education in music from Swami Haridas. After becoming proficient in music education, Tansen stayed under the shelter of Daulat Khan and then was appointed the court singer of King Ramchandra of Rewa. Mughal emperor Akbar called him to his court after hearing the praise of his singing and gave him a place in his Navratna. Old pictures of Tansen provide information about his appearance. Tansen was dark in complexion. He had a thin moustache. He used to wear a white turban. He used to wear white chola. He used to tie a shawl around his waist. No one could match Tansen in singing Dhrupad. Tansen died at the age of 80. He wished that he be buried near the tomb of his Guru Mohammad Gaus. Today, Tansen Music Festival is organized every year at his tomb. Gwalior city is known by the name of Swar Samrat Tansen. Memories of Tansen are associated with most of the ancient assets of the city. Tansen Samadhi located in Hazira is one of the major monuments of the city. Every year thousands of tourists from India and abroad come to see Tansen's tomb. Here, along with Sur Samrat Tansen, the tomb of his Guru Mohammad Gaus is also built.
