Whitby Lobsters - This Is How Much The Crew Get Paid

At last I worked out what the wages are. 🦞 Changing Tides: A New Crew Aboard the Melanie S | Life on a Whitby Lobster Boat. This week, we join skipper Dean Clews — or El-Denio, depending on the weather — aboard the Melanie S, a working lobster boat sailing out of Whitby Harbour at first light. But things are changing at sea. The old crew, Kippers and Jib Jab, have gone their separate ways, and in their place stand George (19) and Ben (20) — young, strong, and with just enough experience to be dangerous. It’s a fresh crew, fresh pots, and a fresh sense of jeopardy: will they catch enough to earn a wage? Or is it beans on toast till payday? Narrated by Gary Bender, with Glenn and his trusty camera tagging along for a bit of social history (and possibly therapy), this 8-minute film follows a full day’s lobster fishing — from first light under Whitby’s famous swing bridge, to landing the catch and counting the takings. With the price of lobster down and the sea as unpredictable as ever, it’s a story of graft, grit, and a surprise delivery of four boxes of mackerel that just might make tomorrow better.
