Ghana’s Interior Ministry has revoked all firearm licences nationwide in a sweeping new gun control overhaul, forcing every licensed gun owner to reapply under stricter rules. Interior Minister Muntaka Mohammed Mubarak says the new system will include mandatory mental health checks, drug screening, and firearms training to improve public safety and close loopholes in the old licensing regime. The decision follows growing concerns over misuse of licensed guns, rising suicide cases involving registered firearms, and recent security incidents, including the Kwabenya shooting that led to the suspension of Kantanka Security Services. The government also plans to destroy over 2,000 seized and surrendered weapons as part of tighter arms regulation in Ghana.
