KOMPAS.TV - Public criticism intensified when former Deputy Chairman of Commission Three, Ahmad Sahroni, called the Indonesian people "unpleasant" for wanting the House of Representatives (DPR) dissolved. The communication style of several DPR members sparked criticism, leading to demonstrations in several regions of Indonesia. In less than a week, there have been two demonstrations at the DPR building: Monday, August 25, and Thursday, August 28. The DPR members' extravagant allowances and facilities were the trigger. The housing allowance, for example, reaching 50 million rupiah per month, was deemed insensitive and lacking empathy for the people struggling amidst the current economic downturn. This allowance was also deemed disproportionate to the DPR members' performance in producing legislative products. Public anger ultimately erupted in two demonstrations over the past week. Affan Kurniawan, an online motorcycle taxi driver who was passing through the crowd, lost his life as people struggled to voice their criticism of the actions of their representatives in Senayan. Although the National Police Chief apologized, the protests persisted. President Prabowo Subianto also openly expressed his disappointment with the authorities' response to the demonstrations.
