HEMANT KUMAR AS A COMPOSER-I (16 June 1920 – 26 September 1989) Hemanta Mukhopadhyay was born in Varanasi in his maternal grandfather’s house. His education took place at Kolkata. While pursuing diploma in engineering, Hemanta decided to quit it midway and devote himself completely to music. He mastered Rabindra Sangeet and started singing in Bengali films. His Bengali songs under the composition of Salil Chowdhury and under his own composition are notable. He composed and leant his voice as a singer under the name Hemant Kumar. He moved to Bombay in 1952 to score the music for ‘Anandmath’, a Hindi film based on a famous Bengali novel of the same name written by Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyaya. For the next two to three decades, Hemant Da, as he was popularly addressed, continued to compose music and sing for several Hindi and Bengali films. He also sang for films in many other Indian languages.
