Which Light Modifier Should You Get? | Take and Make Great Photography with Gavin Hoey

When it comes to choosing the right light modifier for a portrait session, the options can feel overwhelming. Do you need an umbrella or a softbox? Should a stripbox be used in a horizontal or vertical orientation? Will a snoot take away too much power from your flash? To answer these and many other questions about light modifiers, photographer Gavin Hoey compares three hard and three soft light modifiers using the same flash, in the same position, with the same model holding the same pose. For each setup, Gavin provides a quick rundown of the type of results it creates. As a bonus, Gavin demonstrates the lighting results he gets from using the same stripbox in both vertical and horizontal positions. He also combines hard and soft (bounced) light in his small home studio by testing the results from just a bare flash. At the end, Gavin summarizes the findings and shares his thoughts on the effects of the light modifiers for both full-length portraits and close-up head-and-shoulder portraits.
