Patanjali: He Wrote the Rules of Yoga — Then Said the Body Doesn't Matter

You've probably done yoga in a bright studio, on a mat, reaching for your toes to a playlist. The man who actually wrote down what yoga is supposed to be, over two thousand years ago, barely mentioned the body at all. His name was Patanjali. Legend says he began as a serpent that fell into the cupped hands of the yogini Gonika, and became the child she'd prayed for. Sometime around the second century BCE, he compiled the Yoga Sutras: 196 compressed verses whose opening definition has nothing to do with flexibility. Yogash chitta vritti nirodhah — yoga is the stilling of the fluctuations of the mind. Not the body. The mind. To get there, he laid out a path in eight limbs: ethical restraint, personal discipline, a steady seat, breath control, withdrawal of the senses, concentration, meditation, and finally samadhi — the point where the meditator, the act of meditating, and the object of meditation stop feeling like three separate things. Here's the twist most people never hear: in the original text, asana meant one thing only — a steady, comfortable seat for meditation. Not a single backbend. Not one handstand. The elaborate postures the world now calls yoga were developed by a completely different tradition, Hatha Yoga, more than a thousand years later. Stranger still, Patanjali's name is also attached to a landmark Sanskrit grammar commentary and a classical medical text — most scholars believe these were written centuries apart, by different people entirely, one revered name carried by more than one mind. Chapters: 00:00 The Yoga You Think You Know 00:18 The One Who Fell Into Folded Hands 00:38 196 Verses, Not a Single Story 00:58 The Definition Everyone Skips 01:16 The Five Kinds of Mental Noise 01:34 A Path in Eight Limbs 01:53 Yama: How You Treat the World 02:11 Niyama: The Discipline Within 02:28 Asana Did Not Mean What You Think 02:50 Pranayama: The Breath Before the Mind 03:09 Pratyahara: Pulling the Senses Inward 03:27 Dharana: One Single Point 03:43 Dhyana: When Effort Disappears 03:59 Samadhi: When Three Things Become One 04:16 Kaivalya: Not Union, But Aloneness 04:34 Was There More Than One Patanjali 04:54 How the Eight Limbs Got Lost 05:20 The Question He Actually Left Behind (Chapter times are estimated from the script and may shift slightly once the final edit is locked.) Next time you're on a mat, it's worth asking the question Patanjali actually cared about: not how far you can stretch, but what you're actually trying to still.
