The term Palestine comes from Greek and derives from the Philistines, a people who inhabited the region where the Gaza Strip is today in ancient times. For the ancient Greeks, Palestine was the name of the entire coastal region that stretched from Phoenicia, in present-day Lebanon, to the Sinai Peninsula in Egypt.
