The Saint-Andéol massacre, also known as the Éric Bruyas case, is a French criminal case that took place in Saint-Andéol, in the Rhône department, on May 30, 1995. The facts: Four members of the Bébien family—father Vincent, 47, mother Odette, 46, and two of their three children, Vincent-Salvator, 21, and Aline, 16—were murdered with a .22 long rifle in their home in Saint-Andéol-le-Château on May 30, 1995. Their killer then set fire to the single-story house using candles and jerrycans of gasoline to make it appear as though a domestic tragedy had occurred; the explosion destroyed the house. Arrest and indictment: Éric Bruyas, the son-in-law of the Bébien family, born on January 10, 1968, in Givors, denied during his police custody being the perpetrator of the massacre, claiming that the assassins were masked men who were targeting his in-laws, but admitted to setting fire to the house to "protect his wife from psychological trauma." On June 16, 1995, Éric Bruyas was indicted for quadruple murder and the willful destruction of evidence and was imprisoned. Samantha Bébien Bruyas, born in 1970, the eldest daughter of the Bébien family, and Éric Bruyas's wife at the time, was initially suspected of complicity but was quickly exonerated. Trial and Conviction: In October 1999, the jury of the Rhône Assize Court, believing that Éric Bruyas had killed his in-laws to inherit their fortune, sentenced him to life imprisonment with a minimum term of twenty-two years. In 2011, he requested a retrial, but his request was denied due to a lack of new evidence. Eligible for parole in 2017, Éric Bruyas, after multiple rejected requests for conditional release, was finally granted a suspension of his sentence on Monday, October 25, 2021, for reasons related to his health.
