Il metodo Weinstein
Harvey Weinstein took American independent cinema to the next level and transformed the Oscars, all by abusing employees, directors, and women. Harvey and Bob Weinstein founded Miramax—named after their parents, Miriam and Max—as a small distribution company that bought films that no one wanted: foreign films, films with subtitles, films too small for the studios. Their breakthrough came with Soderbergh's Sex, Lies, and Videotape at Sundance in 1989, then with Quentin Tarantino, whom Weinstein tried to convince to cut the ear scene in Reservoir Dogs but failed. Disney bought Miramax for $100 million in 1993. What followed was the golden age: Pulp Fiction, bought by Weinstein on a flight from Los Angeles to New York, Shakespeare in Love, Cinema Paradiso, Life is Beautiful. The Oscars were no longer an award—they were an achievement: Weinstein personally visited Academy voters' homes, hosted dinners, and invented modern Oscar campaigns. Shakespeare in Love's victory over Saving Private Ryan remains the most discussed case in Academy history. All of this had coexisted for decades with what Weinstein was also: a systematic sexual predator, with his first documented assault dating back to the mid-1970s. Miramax used NDAs, agencies like Black Cube, and internal employees to silence victims. In 2017, investigations by The New Yorker (Ronan Farrow, 10 months of work) and The New York Times opened everything up. In 2020, Harvey Weinstein was sentenced to 23 years in prison. ─────────────────────────────── 🔔 Subscribe to never miss the next videos ────────────────────────────── Storyline on IG: https://bit.ly/StorylineIG Storyline on TikTok: https://bit.ly/StorylineTK #cinema #weinstein #miramax #oscar #harveyWeinstein #film 0:00 Intro 0:41 1989: American Independent Cinema Changes 1:23 Harvey and Bob Weinstein and Miramax 4:39 The Origins: Miriam, Max, and the Miramax Name 5:54 The Strategy: Buying the Films No One Wants 11:26 How Weinstein Acquires Films 14:10 Harvey Scissorhands: Cutting Films for the American Market 16:24 Quentin Tarantino and Reservoir Dogs 19:05 How Weinstein Transformed the Oscars 22:06 Disney Buys Miramax for $100 Million 23:38 Pulp Fiction: Bought on a Flight 28:52 Shakespeare in Love vs. Saving Private Ryan 33:45 The Timeline of Harassment: Since the 1970s 36:27 Black Cube and the NDAs 38:30 The New Yorker and New York Investigations Times 40:42 23 years in prison
