This reactivation is triggered by stress or a weakened immune system and appears as painful, dermatomal, raised skin reddening with blisters on one side of the body. With the use of antiviral medications (such as acyclovir), healing can usually be achieved without complications. Occurrence of herpes zoster: Approximately 300,000–400,000 people contract herpes zoster annually Lifetime prevalence: approximately 50%: Approximately one in two people will contract herpes zoster at least once by the age of 85 About two-thirds of these are over 50 years old Typical for people with a weakening immune system Women are more likely to be affected than men Approximately 10–15% of them develop post-herpetic neuralgia Rare in newborns What is the course and development of herpes zoster? → Initial infection in the form of chickenpox → The virus probably spreads neurogenically from the skin to the cerebral and spinal ganglia → Remains in the ganglia for life → Reactivation in cases of (transient) immune deficiency → Viruses reach the skin surface via the sensory nerves, multiply there, and cause herpes zoster in the form of blisters on the corresponding dermatome. (Serious) Complications of Herpes Zoster: 1. Encephalitis (inflammation of the brain, usually begins with fever and headache) 2. Eye problems (in so-called zoster ophthalmicus) 3. Facial paralysis (so-called facial palsy) and hearing loss (in so-called zoster oticus) 4. Post-herpetic neuralgia Treatment Drug therapy: Aciclovir, e.g., 800 mg orally 5 times a day for 7-10 days. Painkillers such as ibuprofen, paracetamol, or opioids (for very severe pain) A cool compress relieves itching Homeopathic remedies do not help Generally: targeted nutrition to strengthen the immune system Course/Prognosis 70% of cases heal without sequelae Healing occurs after 2 to 3 weeks, usually leaving lifelong immunity However, some people develop multiple episodes of herpes zoster. These patients likely benefit from vaccination Since the end of 2018/beginning of 2019, the Robert Koch Institute (STIKO) has recommended vaccination for all people over 60 years of age. ▬ About this channel ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬ With "Video Visit Dr. Weigl," you've found the current, medical-scientific channel that describes topics related to #pain, #medicine, and #health in an understandable way, but based on facts, guidelines, and studies.
