This time, the route was special. We came to the village of Zavyalovo in the Altai Territory not just as travelers—we were searching for family traces. In the 1920s, my wife's ancestors were dispossessed and exiled from this village to Kazakhstan. Like thousands of other families across the country, they were stripped of everything and sent to the steppe. She had been here as a child and remembers some roads, houses, and feelings. We came to walk through these places again—to try to remember at least something. And at the same time, we learned the history of Zavyalovo itself—one of the oldest villages in the Altai Territory, founded in 1782. 330 lakes in the area, a pine forest, therapeutic mud, and the lives of the people who lived, loved, and were exiled here.
