Mixer taps—for cold and hot water, respectively. They are most often made of brass. Ceramic metal boxes—in these boxes, water is supplied and shut off using highly polished ceramic metal discs, usually made of aluminum oxide. The plunger in these boxes is cylindrical with holes on the sides of the cylinder. The nozzle has two protrusions that connect to the upper, movable disc. Both discs have slots for water supply (the upper movable one has V-shaped cutouts that connect to the nozzle protrusions; the lower, fixed one has triangular windows). To open or close such a faucet, you turn the handwheel 90° in either direction—then the slots either align (water flows) or close (no water flows).
