Golden Retriever genetic study has implications for dog AND human psychology!
A 2025 study examined the genetics of behavior in over 1,100 purebred Golden Retriever dogs, using genome-wide association studies (GWAS) and owner-reported behavioral data. Researchers chose Golden Retrievers because selective breeding has created relatively uniform genetics, making gene-behavior links easier to detect than in humans. They identified genetic associations for eight behavioral traits, including aggression, fearfulness, trainability, energy levels, and separation-related problems. Heritability varied widely, from about 5% to 69%, suggesting some behaviors are strongly influenced by genetics. The study found several candidate genes linked to specific traits, such as aggression, fear, and trainability. Importantly, 12 of 18 canine genes examined were also associated with human cognitive, emotional, or psychiatric traits. For example, genes linked to aggression or trainability in dogs were associated with intelligence, depression, emotional sensitivity, and cognitive performance in humans. This suggests that dogs and humans may share some underlying biological mechanisms influencing behavior. Researchers emphasized that these findings show correlations, not causation. Environmental factors, training, and social experiences still play important roles. The study also relied on owner questionnaires and focused on a single breed, limiting generalization. Nevertheless, the results support the idea that inherited genetic differences contribute significantly to behavioral tendencies. The findings challenge the notion that problem behaviors are solely caused by training or environment and highlight the complex interaction between genetics and experience in shaping behavior across species.
