Tupolev Tu-22M3 Backfire Bomber - A Soviet Supersonic Arms Race Story
The Tu-22M3 Backfire Supersonic Bomber story began in the 1950's, starting with the Soviet Union's aim of using Bomber forces capable of reaching key targets as far away as the United States. The Soviet Cold War strategic bombing operation plans in the 1950's would have primarily used thermal nuclear weapons, the nuclear warheads would have been deployed over the target as free falling bombs. However, the Soviets had a big problem, none of the current bomber aircraft available at the time had a realistic chance of successfully launching a long range attack on distance targets such as the USA. The documentary includes footage of bomber aircraft from the 1950's and 1960's and has the latest, little shown footage of the Tupolev Tu-22M3 Backfire - C a Supersonic, long-range strategic and maritime strike bomber.
