Understanding the Hierarchy of Numbers | AMI Montessori Math Presentation
Prerequisites: • Small Bead Frame Age: 5 ½ – 6 ½ Materials: Geometric representation of the hierarchies from 1 to 1 million. The material does not go past 1 million because this is enough for the child to imagine the following categories. It is scaled to a half centimeter rather than to a whole because the size of the million has to be more practical. The relation between the geometric representations is important. 3 cubes are green, 2 bars are blue, 2 squares are red and the representing point is the line and surface. 1 green cube .5cm which represents 1 1 blue bar .5cm x .5cm marked with green divisors which represents 10 1 red square prism 5cm x 5 cm marked with blue bars which represents 100 1 green cube 5cm marked with red lines which represents 1000 1 blue bar 5 cm x 5 cm marked with green which represents 10,000 1 red square prism 50cm x 50 cm marked with blue which represents 100,000 1 green cube 50cm marked with red which represents 1,000,000 Small number cards for 1, 10, 100, 1,000, 10,000, 100,000, and 1,000,000 2 mats or 1 large mat Control of Error: None Direct Purpose: • To make the child aware of the hierarchy of the decimal system up to 1,000,000 • To associate the quantity and the symbols of the new categories
