We’re tackling May/June 2024 Computer Science Paper 1: Computer Systems. This 1 hr 45-mins exam covers all questions on the paper. Use a dark blue or black pen, and an HB pencil for diagrams. Remember: Write your name, center number, & candidate number. Answer all questions in the space provided. Avoid erasable pens, correction fluid, and calculators. The paper is of 75 marks. Questions: 1. Data Storage: Q1: Measurement equal to 8 bits? Answer: Byte Q2: Bits in a Kibibyte? Answer: 1024 x 8 bits Q3: Measurement equal to 1024 GiB? Answer: Tebibyte (TiB) 2. File Size Calculation: Q1: File size of a 16-bit color image (512 x 512 pixels) in kilobytes? Answer: 512 KB 3. Data Transmission: Q1: Which is not a data transmission method: Serial, Simplex, Parallel, Parity? Answer: Parity Q2: Smaller units of data for transmission? Answer: Packets Q3: Symmetric encryption? **Answer: Uses the same key for encryption and decryption. 4. Binary Systems: Q1: Base 16 number system? Answer: Hexadecimal Q2: Convert 10, 50, 2011 to binary: Answer: 10 = 1010, 50 = 110010, 2011 = 11111011011 Q3: Why use binary? Answer: Computers use binary as they process two states (0 and 1). 5. Binary Addition: Q1: Add 0000 and 0101? Answer: 0101 Q2: Two’s complement integer for -32? Answer: Invert bits of 32 and add 1. 6. Software Examples: Q1: Example of system software? **Answer: Operating System (e.g., Windows) Software Basics & Exam Tips: Use generic terms for software, not brand names Application software examples: word processors, spreadsheets, etc. System software manages hardware; application software performs tasks For CPU processing, know terms like address, ALU, control unit Instruction sets: Lists of machine code commands Error detection methods: Parity checks, checksums, echo check MAC vs. IP addresses: MACs are assigned, IPs can be static/dynamic DDoS attacks overwhelm servers; proxies can help mitigate them Secondary storage examples: HDD & SSD AI simulates intelligent behavior; expert systems use interfaces and knowledge bases.
