"The History of Klezmer Music Through Sight and Sound" (a talk and Q&A with Joshua Horowitz)
Klezmer music can be traced back to as early as the 16th century and appears in many guises throughout its history. In this talk co-sponsored by Jewish Family Services and KlezKanada, professor, musician, and composer Joshua Horowitz traced the role of klezmer via rare historical recordings, written documents, and videos, giving the audience a chance to hear and see the development of music and observe how it has changed over time. Josh also led the audience through each musical stage of the eight-day wedding. A lively Q&A followed the talk. About the speaker: Joshua Horowitz received his master's degree in composition and music theory from the Academy of Music in Graz, Austria, where he taught music theory and served as research fellow and director of the Yiddish Music Research Project for eight years. He is the founder and director of the ensemble Budowitz, a founding member of Veretski Pass, and has performed and recorded with Itzhak Perlman, The Vienna Chamber Orchestra, Theodore Bikel, Ben Goldberg, Rubin & Horowitz, Brave Old World, Adrienne Cooper, and Ruth Yaakov. Joshua is the recipient of more than 40 awards for his work as both composer and performer.
