The Modern Fantasy Problem Nobody Likes To Talk About
Modern classics like The Lord of the Rings, Game of Thrones, The Witcher, and World of Warcraft, show how older fantasy writing and its storytelling was rooted in conflicts with recognizable human behavior, and why that made the stakes hit harder. Orcs vs humans, North vs South, nobles vs peasants, humans vs non-humans, Horde vs Alliance. Fantasy tropes work when they reflect the messy parts of us, not when it airbrushes them away.
