USAF F-105D Thunderchief Fighter-Bomber Weapons & Offensive Capabilities - Outstanding Color! 1960

This very detailed film, produced in 1960 by Republic Aviation and the USAF, focuses on weapons, navigation systems and offensive capabilities of the single seat F-105D fighter-bomber, highlighting the mission roles it was originally designed to perform. The Republic F-105 "Thunderchief" all-weather fighter-bomber was operated by United States Air Force from 1958 to 1984. The "Thud" was the USAF's primary attack aircraft during the early years of the Vietnam War, with over 20,000 sorties, many over North Vietnam. The F-105 could carry up to 14,000 lb (6,400 kg) of bombs and missiles. Out of the 833 produced, 382 were lost. This acceptably high attrition led to the F4 Phantom II replacing the F-105 on many missions later in the war. In Vietnam, the single-seat F-105D was the most used version delivering heavy bomb loads against a wide variety of targets. Meanwhile, the two-seat F-105F and F-105G Wild Weasel variants became the first dedicated "Suppression of Enemy Air Defense" (SEAD) aircraft in the USAF and continued in service after the F-105D was retired. The surviving copy of this film is very good quality, but had pronounced color shifts and darkening because of its age.
