Celebrating Tiyo Soga: A commemorative concert at Wits Great Hall
Tomorrow, an orchestra and a choir will take the stage of the Wits Great Hall in Johannesburg, to pay tribute to Tiyo Soga. Tiyo Soga was a translator, journalist, hymn writer and the first Black South African ordained into the Christian ministry. His music resonates most strongly with his contribution to traditional church hymns in isiXhosa, most notably "Lizalis' idinga lakho" ("Fulfil Your Promise"). The song became the unofficial anthem and symbol of resistance to colonial oppression, bringing healing to many. Curated by South African musician and composer Mandisi Dyantyis, and conducted by Orchestra scholar, Kutlwano Masote, the "Tribute to Tiyo Soga Concert" will bring together the legacies of former President Thabo Mbeki, who turned 84 years old yesterday, and pioneering hymn composer Tiyo Soga through music, reflection and remembrance. To talk more about the Legacy of Tiyo Soga and tomorrow's concert, we are joined in studio by the Thabo Mbeki Foundation Chief Operations Officer, Lukhanyo Neer. We are also joined by the Conductor of the "Tribute to Tiyo Soga Concert", Kutlwano Masote. For more news, visit sabcnews.com and #SABCNews on all Social Media platforms.
