Making Cravat and Pocket Kerchief on Singer 201K
Using my Singer 201K and Necchi SuperNova, I create two examples. Fabric for Cravate It is the length that it is the challenge with the cravat. It needs to be roughly 90cm/1 yard in length for someone of average height. For shorter/taller add or reduce the length as you prefer. It is about 45cm/0.5 yard wide before folding along the length. Add seam allowances at the ends and along the side opposite to the fold. You can make use two pieces 45cm/0.5yard joined at the centre back of the neck. Add seam allowances to both pieces for the join. Fabric for Kerchief The finished size for the kerchief is about 30cm/12" square. Add seam allowances on four sides. Seam Allowance Chose the seam width depending on your preference and the properties of the fabric. I have used seam allowances 0.5cm:3/16" to 1.5cm:5/8". For fabric which is woven loosely, increase the seam allowance and/or stabilize the edges. Stitching, fray stop, adhesive, narrow strips of light weight iron-on stabilizer, and seam tape all work well. Avoid making an uncomfortable and hot cravate. Minimize bulk around the neck: Trim seam allowances; use the least bulky seam re-inforcement option; and decrease the finished width of the fabric in the neck area especially for heavy or thick fabric. Reduce the width of the area around the neck (shown as ---------- in the example below). Increase the width to arrive at the final width for the tails. Decrease and increase consistently to avoid visible step changes in width. Think of a large bow tie shape -=O0O=----------=O0O=-.
